Use Dining Options with the Square App

When you’re ringing up a sale with the Square Point of Sale app or Square for Restaurants POS app, you can note whether customers are eating in, having takeaway, or requesting delivery. Dining Options is available on Android and iOS devices running the latest version of the Square app.

Your selected dining option will appear in the following places:

  • Customer receipts

  • Order tickets for the kitchen and KDS

  • In-app sales history

  • Downloadable CSVs from your online Square Dashboard

Enable Dining Options

Dining options are set up by default with Square for Restaurants. To enable dining options for Square Point of Sale:

  1. Go to Items > Settings on your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Click Dining Options > Set Up Dining Options.

Four default options are automatically created when the feature is enabled:

  • Eat-in

  • Takeaway

  • Delivery

  • Pickup

Keep the default list or customise your options. The first option listed will be the default for every new sale. Only non-default dining options will show in the order ticket. Dining options are location-specific and you can customise the list for each location.

Edit Dining Options

  1. Go to Items > Settings on your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Click Dining options.

  3. To edit, delete, or create new Dining Options, click Edit Dining Options > enter a dining option name or make other changes > then click Save.

  4. To rearrange your options, click on the left of the dining option name > drag and drop the option to your preferred order.

Apply Dining Options In-App

For every order placed at the point of sale, your default dining option is automatically applied to the current ticket.

In the Square Point of Sale app, to change the dining option for the entire sale on Square Point of Sale, swipe your finger over the default dining option. To apply a dining option to a specific item in the cart, tap the item > choose a dining option > tap Save.

In the Restaurants app, to change the dining option for a ticket, select the ticket that you’d like to edit and tap Actions > Dining Option. To apply a dining option to a specific item in the cart, tap the item > Modify > choose a dining option > tap Save.

Tips for Using Dining Options

  • You can create a total of ten dining options. 

  • Dining options are saved to your item library and not to any specific device.

  • New dining options are enabled for all locations by default.

  • If you delete a dining option, it will be deleted from every location.

  • Dining options aren’t available for online orders placed from your online store or third-party orders. Online orders use Fulfilment types.
