Create and edit open tickets
About open tickets
Enable and use Open Tickets to create, edit and save an order before completing the sale at a later time on your mobile device or Square hardware. You can also print a bill before closing a ticket. Open tickets are helpful for restaurants and other businesses that want to create and add to a ticket then process payment later.
Open Tickets are moving to the Square Order Manager in January 2025. To give you time to adjust to the changes before the migration begins, the opt-in period will last from 6 January 2025 until 25 February 2025. You can manually opt in to the new experience by navigating to your Square Dashboard > Settings > Open Tickets > Schedule now to choose a date and time to update your Square POS apps.

Before you begin
Before you can create open tickets, you need to enable Open Tickets. You have two options for enabling Open Tickets:
From your Square Dashboard. You enable these through device profiles, which apply settings across a group of devices. Learn how to create and assign device profiles.
From the Square POS apps.
Once you enable Open Tickets, you have two options for creating open tickets from the Square apps:
Create a new ticket before a sale
Create a new ticket during a sale
Once an open ticket is created, you can edit the ticket name and optional note from the Square POS apps.
Checkout with Square invoices is not supported at this time.
Open Tickets have a limit of 500 items and will be marked as full when the limit is met. If an open ticket reaches the item limit, you can save the ticket and create a new one. You can still delete, split, void, comp or edit the name or notes of the ticket once it reaches the item limit. You will not be able to save or merge open tickets if doing so would result in the ticket having more than 500 items. Learn how to split and merge open tickets or comp and void open tickets.
With the migration to Order Manager, you will no longer be able to pay for an open ticket with an invoice that was sent to a buyer for payment. Instead, you need to create & add items to the invoice and manually send it to the buyer. Once the invoice is paid, it will create an associated order. Orders are displayed in the Order Manager on Square Dashboard and the Square POS and can be viewed in the All orders and In store views under the Completed tab.
