Create a passkey
About passkeys
Passkeys are a more secure and faster alternative to traditional passwords. Unlike passwords, which require you to remember and enter them manually, a passkey binds your account to a specific device or a cloud service, allowing you to access your account simply by using your device's biometric features (like a fingerprint or facial recognition) or a PIN.
With Square, you can sign into Square Dashboard on a web browser by using your device’s biometrics (like a fingerprint or facial recognition) or a PIN instead of a password.
Before you begin
Passkeys can be used to sign in to your Square Dashboard and Square mobile apps. You can sync up to five passkeys across devices.
To use passkeys on a computer, make sure your operating system meets these requirements:
Windows: Your computer must be running at least Windows 10 software.
macOS: Your computer must be running at least macOS Ventura software.
ChromeOS: Your computer must be running at at least ChromeOS 109 software.
Apple iOS: Your phone must be running iOS 16 or later.
Android: Your phone must be running Android 9 or later.
Additionally, your computer or mobile device will need a supported browser such as:
Google Chrome 109, or higher
mac Safari 16, or higher
Microsoft Edge 109, or higher
For an optimal passkey experience, we recommend updating your device to the latest version of its operating system. Depending on your system and browser, creation and use of passkeys may not be supported in private browsing modes like incognito.
Set up a passkey
Setting up a passkey follows the same steps regardless of which OS you use.
When you sign in to Square Dashboard, you may be asked to set up a passkey. On macOS 15+ or Chrome 136+, a passkey will be created automatically by default. Earlier versions will show a prompt asking if you’d like to create one.
- Sign in to your Square Dashboard with your email/phone number and password.
- You’ll see a prompt to set up a passkey.
- Click Set up passkey to continue.
- Your browser will take over and create a cryptic key for your Square account.
- Follow the instructions of the prompts on your dashboard to complete authentication, such as setting up face ID, touch ID, a PIN, and screen lock pattern.
You can also manually create a passkey:
- Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign-in & Security.
- Scroll down to Passkeys and click on Create a Passkey.
- Authenticate either using your password or two-step verification.
