About managing your schedule
Team members can manage their schedule to set expectations with their employers about their availability, trade shifts, pick up shifts, and request shift covers.
Before you begin
Once your employer creates and publishes your schedule, you should receive an automated email and or Square Team App push notification with a direct link to view your upcoming shifts for the week. To receive notifications and updates, update your notification settings in the Square Team App. Learn how to Manage schedule requests.
You can request shift trades, shift covers, and time off as well as pick up shifts from the Square Team App.
Request a shift trade
You can request to trade shifts from your Square Team App.
From the Square Team App tap Shifts > Schedule.
Use the date selector to choose the appropriate time frame for the schedule.
Select the shift you want to trade to open up the Shift details screen.
Select Trade shift.
From the list of available shifts, select the shift that works best and select Request trade.
The team member whose shift was requested for trade will receive an email and/or push notification in the Square Team App (depending on their notifications settings) alerting them that another member of the team wants to trade shifts, to which they can accept or decline.
Request a shift cover
You can request shift covers from your Square Team App.
From the Square Team App tap Shifts > Schedule.
Use the date selector to choose the appropriate time frame for the schedule.
Select the shift you want someone to cover to open up the Shift details screen and select Request shift cover.
Tap Request.
If the shift cover request expires, you can resubmit the request by following the same steps. If you need to cancel a shift cover request, you can go back to the Shift details view and tap Cancel shift cover request.
Pick up a shift
When you or another team member submits a shift trade request, the open shift becomes visible to any team member with a matching job title not already scheduled to work during that specific timeframe. You can pick up shifts from your Square Team App.
From the Square Team App, select Shifts > Schedule.
Select the shift you want to cover and submit your request.
Request time off
You can make, monitor, or cancel time-off requests for future schedules from your Square Team App. You cannot request time off for schedules that have already been published.
From the Square Team App, select More.
Select Time off > Create time off.
Select the date and enter a Start time and End time or toggle on All day to select one or more full days.
Enter any notes for your request in Reason.
Select Save time off.
