Set up cash management

    Cash management promotes greater cash flow accountability by letting you know how much cash you start with and what to expect in the drawer at the end of the session.

    Before you begin 

    You have two options for setting up cash management.

    • You can turn on cash management directly from the Square POS apps or Square hardware

    • You can turn on cash management via a device profile from the Square Dashboard

    You can only use cash management in the Square POS apps on the following devices and Square hardware.

    • Android tablet

    • iPad

    • Square Terminal

    • Square Register

    Cash management isn’t available on mobile devices.

    If you are setting up cash management from the Square Dashboard, you need to have a device profile created. Learn to create and assign device profiles.

    Step 1: Add the Cash Management Add-on 

    You need to add the Cash Management Add-on from the Square POS app or your Square hardware, or via a device profile in the Square Dashboard.

    Square POS apps and Square hardware

    1. Open the Square POS app.
    2. Tap ≡ More > Settings.
    3. Scroll down to Add-ons and tap the plus sign (+).
    4. Tap Cash Management > Add for free.

    Once you turn on cash management from the Square POS apps or Square hardware, it will only be enabled for that specific device.

    Square Dashboard

    To turn on cash management from the Square Dashboard, you need to have a device profile created. Enabling cash management in a device profile will add cash management capabilities to all devices assigned to that profile.

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.
    2. Select the device profile you want to add cash management to.
    3. Click Manage under Settings in your device profile summary.
    4. Click the plus sign (+) next to Add-ons.
    5. Click Add for Free next to Cash Management.
    6. Click Save.

    Step 2: Edit your cash management settings

    Once you have added the Cash Management Add-on, you can edit your cash management settings.

    Square POS apps and Square hardware

    1. Open the Square POS app.
    2. Tap ≡ More > Settings.
    3. Scroll down to Add-ons and tap Cash Management.
    4. Customize your default starting cash and email preferences for your cash report.

    Any changes you make to your settings will automatically save on that specific device.

    Square Dashboard

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.
    2. Select the device profile you want to add cash management to.
    3. Click Manage under Settings in your device profile summary.
    4. Click Cash Management under Add-ons.
    5. Customize your default starting cash and email preferences for your cash report.

    Any changes you make to your settings will automatically save on all devices assigned to that profile.

    Step 3: Use cash management on additional POS devices (optional)

    If you set up cash management from the Square POS apps or Square hardware, it will only be enabled for that specific device. To use cash management on additional devices, you will need to turn on cash management per device.

    1. Open the Square POS app.

    2. Tap ≡ More > Settings.

    3. Scroll down to Add-ons and tap Cash Management.

    4. Toggle ON Use on this device under Manage add-on.
