Manage signatures for payments

Sellers with the account and setting permission to configure checkout settings. Set permissions in Square Dashboard.

About signature settings

Card providers don’t require signatures for dip, tap, and swipe payments in the US and Canada. To help speed up your checkout experience, you can disable customer signatures for all card payments in the Square app.

Before you begin

  • While signatures aren’t essential to process payments, enabling signatures can add an extra layer of protection in case of a chargeback.

  • Choosing not to collect signatures won’t affect your processing rates.

  • Even when signatures are disabled with Square, card providers may request signatures for some transactions.

Enable or disable signatures

Square Point of Sale app

If you’re using the Square POS app on Square hardware or a mobile device, you can manage signatures from your app.

  1. Sign in to your Square Point of Sale and go to ≡ More > Settings > Checkout > Signature and receipt.
  2. Toggle Collect signatures on or off. If toggled on, choose to either have customers Sign on device or Sign on printed receipt.

Square for Retail and Square for Restaurants

If you’re using Square Restaurants POS or Square for Retail POS apps, you can manage signature settings from Square Dashboard, not your Square app.

  1. From Square Dashboard, go to Settings > Device Management.
  2. Select your device.
  3. Under Signature and receipt, toggle Collect signatures on or off. If toggled on, choose to collect signatures from Device or Printed receipt.
  4. Click Save.
