  • About transferring your domain to Square

Transferring your third-party domain name to Square allows you to manage both your domain and website from your Square account, making billing for everything your Square Online site needs easier to manage.

    Before you begin

Connecting your third-party domain to your Square Online site before you transfer can minimise any potential down time for your site while the domain is transferring. Learn how to connect your domain to Square Online.

Make sure that your domain is eligible for transfer. Review these eligibility considerations:

    • Square can only accept ".com," ".net," and ".org" domains for transfer. All other domains need to be connected to your site instead.

    • Since Register.com is Square's registrar, domains they already host (but not through Square) can't be transferred. These domains will need to be connected to your site instead.

    • Making any changes to your registrant contact information (name, address, email, or phone number) results in a 60-day registrar lock, during which you won’t be able to transfer your domain. If you wish to transfer your domain right away, do not update your registrant contact information. This is not a policy set by Square, but a restriction put in place by ICANN - the international, non-profit organisation that oversees the registration of all domain names globally.

Confirm with your current domain host what the domain transfer process should be from their side to make sure you don't miss any steps.

The domain transfer requires a one-time payment that automatically extends your existing domain subscription by one year. Most domain transfers will take approximately 7-10 days to complete.

To transfer your domain to Square, you need access to your Square Dashboard as well as access to your current domain host information.

    Transfer your domain to Square

You can start the transfer process from your Square Dashboard.

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Sales channels > Online > Website > Domains.

    2. Select Connect domain.

    3. Select Use a domain I own elsewhere, type in the domain name you want to transfer and select Verify.

    4. Select transfer your domain and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Once you complete the purchase process in Square, complete the follow-up steps to finish the transfer from your current domain host.

    5. With your current domain host, follow their steps to:

      • Disable WHOIS privacy protection

      • Disable the registrar lock

      • Ensure your contact email address is correct and you have access to it

      • Get your domain authorisation (EPP/transfer) code from the current registrar and enter it in Square Online to authorise the transfer process

    6. Decide where to connect the domain name. From Square Online, you can choose to connect it to a Square Online site in your account or leave the domain set up the way it is if you don’t want to use it with a Square Online site.

Once you complete all the steps, you’ll receive some important emails from your current host and from Square to take action on, including what’s known as a “Form of Authorisation.” Be sure to read and follow the instructions in these emails to finalise the transfer process.

Your domain will remain active during the process and you can check the transfer progress from your Square Dashboard by going to Sales channels > Online. We’ll send you an email to let you know when the transfer is finished, usually within 7-10 days.

    Cancel the domain transfer
