About the item grid
The item grid transforms your point of sale into a lightning-fast, user-friendly tool. Building your item grid allows you to add and quickly access popular items, discounts, gift cards, rewards or categories — all from one interface. Enhance efficiency, reduce waiting time and boost customer satisfaction with ease.
If you have multiple locations, you can sync your item grid layout from one location to others using Standard Mode on iOS. This eliminates the need to manually recreate the grid at each location.
Before you begin
You can customise the appearance of the item grid on your point of sale app and devices.
You need items in your item library before you can add them to the grid. Learn how to create and edit items.
The item grid is available on the Square Point of Sale app on iOS and Android devices, Square Register, Square Terminal and Square Handheld.
Set up an item grid
You can set up and customise your item grid from the checkout screen on your point of sale app.
- Open your point of sale app and tap Checkout. For any restaurants mode, the grid lives under Menu.
- Tap Edit at the top of the item grid. Tap Edit POS layout if using restaurants mode.
- Tap the + icon on an empty tile to add items or shortcuts. Alternatively, press and hold an empty square to add items or shortcuts.
- Optionally, tap the pencil icon to edit the page name, then tap Done.
- You can either:
- Select from Items, Gift cards, Rewards, Discounts or Services to add a shortcut,
- Tap an existing item from your Square item library, or
- Tap Create a new item, Create a discount, Create a service.
- Tap Done.
- Open your point of sale app and tap Checkout. For any restaurants mode, the grid lives under Menu.
- Tap Edit at the top of the item grid. Tap Edit POS layout if using restaurants mode.
- Tap the + icon on an empty tile to add items or shortcuts. Alternatively, press and hold an empty square to add items or shortcuts.
- Optionally, tap the pencil icon to edit the page name, then tap Done.
- Choose to Create item, Create service, Create discount, or select from existing Items, Gift cards, Rewards, Discounts or Services to add a shortcut, or scroll down and tap an existing item from your Square item library.
- Tap Done.
Rearrange or remove tiles
Tap Edit at the top of the item grid.
Drag tiles to rearrange them, or tap a tile and select Remove to delete it from the grid.
Tap Done.
Tile types
The item grid supports several tile types to help you build an efficient checkout layout:
Item tiles – Add individual items to the grid for quick one-tap checkout. Items with stock tracking display their current stock count on the tile.
Variation tiles – Add a specific item variation (such as a size or colour) directly to the grid. Tapping a variation tile adds it to the cart immediately without opening the item details screen.
Category tiles – Add a category to the grid. Tapping a category tile opens a list of items in that category for you to browse and select.
Custom amount tiles – Add a custom amount tile to enter a unique price at checkout without navigating to a separate screen.
Shortcut tiles – Add shortcuts for clearing the cart, adding gift cards, rewards, discounts, customers, service charges or services.
Switch back to the previous layout
If you’d like to revert to the previous item grid, you can do so from your Square Dashboard:
Go to Square Dashboard > What’s New > Early Feature Access.
Turn off the updated checkout experience.
Note: The option to switch back is available for 90 days after the update is enabled on your account. If you choose to switch back, changes that you make on the previous layout will not get synced to the new layout.
Sync your item grid across locations
If you use Standard Mode on iOS and manage multiple locations, you can sync your item grid layout to other locations. This saves time by applying your Favourites page configuration from one location to others without manual recreation.
Navigate to Settings > Checkout.
Tap Sync Item Grids at the bottom of the list.
Note: Cross-location sync is available on iOS devices in Standard Mode. Android devices and Square hardware sync the item grid to all devices within the same location only.
