About selling items by weight

If your business needs to sell items by weight, you can create items with weight-based units and connect a compatible scale to start selling with the Square Point of Sale and Square Retail POS app.

These scales measure the weight of an item and issue a barcode label that contains both an item’s SKU (stock-keeping unit) number as well as the total weight or price of an item. When items with these types of barcodes are scanned, the item’s weight and price information is automatically captured on your Square POS or Square Retail POS app.

The CAS PD-2 USB scale is not supported with Square Restaurant POS, Square Invoices and Square Appointments POS apps.

Before you begin

  • In order to sell items by weight or use a compatible scale with your Square account, you’ll need to make sure you have the appropriate unit types enabled for weight measurements. You can use the following unit types: Gram (g), Kilogram (kg), and Ounce (oz).

  • Ensure the CAS PD-2 USB scale is compatible with your device. Learn more about connecting a scale to your Point of sale.

  • Item modifiers are not compatible with barcode scanners, regardless of if the item is sold by weight or not. Instead, use item variations with different SKUs or price look-up codes (PLU) for each variation and its associated price.

  • If the unit type is not compatible with your scale, you’ll need to enter the amount manually.

  • Make sure your scale units and item units match.
