Create a passkey

Who is this article for?
Only account owners can create a passkey for their account.

About passkeys

Passkeys are a more secure and faster alternative to traditional passwords. Unlike passwords, which require you to remember and enter them manually, a passkey binds your account to a specific device or a cloud service, allowing you to access your account simply by using your device’s biometric features (like a fingerprint or facial recognition) or a PIN.

With Square, you can sign in to Square Dashboard on a web browser by using your device’s biometrics (like a fingerprint or facial recognition) or a PIN instead of a password.

Before you begin

Passkeys can be used to sign in to your Square Dashboard and Square mobile apps. You can sync up to five passkeys across devices.

To use passkeys on a computer, make sure your operating system meets these requirements:

  • Windows: Your computer must be running at least Windows 10 software.

  • macOS: Your computer must be running at least macOS Ventura software.

  • ChromeOS: Your computer must be running at at least ChromeOS 109 software.

  • Apple iOS: Your phone must be running iOS 16 or later.

  • Android: Your phone must be running Android 9 or later.

Additionally, your computer or mobile device will need a supported browser such as:

  • Google Chrome 109 or higher

  • Mac Safari 16 or higher

  • Microsoft Edge 109, or higher

For an optimal passkey experience, we recommend updating your device to the latest version of its operating system. Depending on your system and browser, creation and use of passkeys may not be supported in private browsing modes like Incognito.

When you create a passkey, you opt in to a passkey-first, password-less sign-in experience. It's important to create passkeys only on personal devices that you fully control. Once a passkey is created on a device, anyone who can unlock that device will be able to sign into your Square account using the passkey, even if you have previously signed out.

Set up a passkey

Square Dashboard

Setting up a passkey follows the same steps regardless of which OS you use.

When you sign in to Square Dashboard, you may be asked to set up a passkey. On macOS 15+ or Chrome 136+, a passkey will be created automatically by default. Earlier versions will show a prompt asking if you’d like to create one.

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard with your email/phone number and password.
  2. You’ll see a prompt to set up a passkey.
  3. Click Set up passkey to continue.
  4. Your browser will take over and create a cryptic key for your Square account.
  5. Follow the instructions of the prompts on your Dashboard to complete authentication, such as setting up face ID, touch ID, a PIN and screen lock pattern.

You can also manually create a passkey:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign-in & Security.
  2. Scroll down to Passkeys and click on Create a Passkey.
  3. Authenticate either using your password or two-step verification.

Register your device

  1. Your browser will take over and create a cryptic key for your Square account.
  2. Follow the instructions of the prompts on your device.

After a passkey is created, it’s added to the Passkeys section. In this section, you can check which passkeys are available across your devices. You can add multiple devices as trusted options to use your passkey.

If you don’t want other people to have access to your Square account, do not create a passkey on a shared device.

Sign in to your Square account using a passkey

After you create and save a passkey on your device, you can use the passkey to sign in to your Square account on the Square Dashboard.

Sign in using passkeys on Square Dashboard

  1. When you visit the Square login screen, your device will automatically prompt you to authenticate using face recognition or fingerprint.

On earlier versions of macOS (before macOS 15) or Chrome (before Chrome 136), you’ll need to click Sign in with a passkey or enter your email address or phone number and click Continue before being prompted to authenticate.

Sign in using passkeys on another device

If your passkey is stored on your mobile device, you can use it to sign in to Square Dashboard on your desktop.

  1.  When you visit the Square loginscreen, your desktop will automatically display a QR code.

  2. Scan the QR code with your mobile device’s camera.

  3. Follow the instructions on your mobile device to complete authentication, such as setting up face ID, touch ID, a PIN and screen lock pattern.

Remove a passkey

If you want to completely remove a passkey from your Square account, ensure that you delete it from both your account and your device (or Password managers) to fully remove the passkey. You will need to log in using other passkeys or use your traditional password method to sign in to Square.

Square Dashboard

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & Settings > Personal information > Sign in & security.
  2. Scroll down to Passkeys, find the passkey you want to remove and click Remove.
  3. Authenticate either using your password or two-step verification.

Square App

  1. Open the Square app and tap ≡ More > Settings > Account.
  2. Scroll down to Passkeys, find the passkey you want to remove and tap the garbage icon.
  3. Authenticate either using your password or two-step verification.
